This is a Permanent Full-Time opportunity.

Summary
Reporting to the Coordinator, Collections Services, the Cataloguer catalogues and classifies Library materials. The Cataloguer provides database maintenance support, maintains authority files, participates in training staff, and resolves cataloguing problems and issues. This position works collaboratively with others and builds positive relationships with internal and external customers to contribute to the achievement of the London Public Library Service Excellence Model.

Accountabilities

1. Cataloguing & Bibliographic Database Maintenance Support
• Catalogues a full range of materials by using existing cataloguing copy and by applying local standards and procedures. Searches for and edits copy; classifies materials according to international standards, edits and assigns subject headings and edits and develops appropriate call numbers, as required. Adds item records to the LPL database.
• Creates original cataloguing for a range of print, audio-visual and electronic materials when necessary by applying local standards and procedures. Classifies materials according to international standards. Creates original records, assigns call numbers and subject headings and links copies in the database.
• Knowledge of metadata concepts pertaining to records created in support of access to digitized collections
• Working with the Coordinator, Collections Services, revise local cataloguing standards as required to best match the strategic priorities of the Library
• Working with the Coordinator, Collections Services, identifies inefficiencies and adjusts processes accordingly
• Coordinates and oversees vendor efforts in supplying cataloguing records
• Maintains bibliographic records in the database, as required.
• Develops and expands classification schedules, as required, under the supervision of the Coordinator, Collections Services.
• Maintains authority database according to Library standards
• Works collaboratively with public services staff to resolve questions of classification, subject headings, etc.
• Provides quality assurance for vendor MARC records where applicable and works with colleagues in the Collections department to ensure the integrity of loading MARC records in the ILS.
• Provides expertise and advice on the Library’s digital projects; works with other departments, such as the London Room, to define metadata needs for unique item such as local history materials.

2. Departmental Support
• Participates in the training of Collections Services /Cataloguing staff on cataloguing policies and procedures.
• Advises Cataloguing Assistants on complex cataloguing issues; solves complex issues, as needed.
• Collaborates and consults with departmental staff in the development of cataloguing procedures, as required.
• In the absence of the Coordinator, Collections Services, performs daily and periodic database routines.
• Writes, updates, and evaluates internal procedures.
• Prepares reports and compiles statistics, as required.
• Participates in departmental planning and on system-wide teams.
• Keeps current in the field of library and information science, and specifically cataloguing, by seeking out learning opportunities, best practices and reading professional literature, participating in online discussion groups, etc. and communicates new and emerging developments to other staff.

Qualifications

• A Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited institution, with courses on advanced level cataloguing, or equivalent.
• Twelve to eighteen months of experience in public library service with automated cataloguing systems and online bibliographic utilities.
• Proven knowledge of, and abilities using, electronic information resources, office productivity software (i.e. Microsoft Office), and other information technologies.
• Accurate keyboarding skills and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated knowledge of cataloguing principles for choice and form of entry, descriptive cataloguing and MARC coding including knowledge of AACR2, RDA, MARC 21, LCSH, Dewey, Canadiana and LC authorities, LC rule interpretations and experience with authority control procedures
• A bias for action, innovation and execution and ability to work independently.
• Demonstrated customer service focus.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build beneficial relationships with key external and internal stakeholders.
• Good organizational skills with proven ability to multi-task and work accurately while handling multiple tasks.
• Effective communicator with good written and verbal skills.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as required

Band 6 - $29.657 to $37.888 per hour.
